The Voices Within
no, not the Christina Aguilera song!
the voices in your head! do you hear anything when you read?
as some of you guys know, i've had a msg up on my MSN for a day now asking whether or not you guys hear your voice or your friend's voice when you read their msgs online.
now this whole "investigation" or "study," if you will, stemmed from a conversation i had with Brenda. she said something that i could hear her saying in my head, so she thought i was weird. so i asked her whether or not she hears my voice in her head when she reads my msgs. she said no.
so that just got me a bit interested in what other ppl thought. who was the weird one? her or me? who was the normal one & who was the abnormal one? hahaha..the study was pretty fun.
so it's been pretty much a day, & i didn't go out of my way to ask ppl. only the ppl i was talking to or questioned me about the question (actually quite a few ppl actually responded to the msg with a question for clarification). so i was pretty happy about that. ppl actually read & reply.
so in total, i was able to survey about 15ppl. not much, but it'll do for now. heck after reading this blog, & you weren't asked or responded, reply in the comment section! it'll be interesting to hear what your views are, & who you hear in YOUR head! :)
it was pretty much a split between the two, with 2 extra categories. 6 ppl responded saying that they heard their friend's voice when they read their msgs. 7 ppl responded that they heard their own voice when they read their friend's msgs. 1 said no voice, while another 1 said not sure.
i still pretty much find this fascinating. when we read something, i'm almost certain that you'll hear some sort of voice in your head, whether it be your own, or your friends, or someone else. i just find it that when you read something, you just gotta, hear it to understand it, to comprehend it, to dissect it. with words, you just have to sound it out in order for it to be pronounced. it's a language & language is sound, noise (not always the case. math isn't a sound, but it can be interpreted as a language.)
for those who don't hear a voice, someone insightfully said to me that they probably don't hear a voice 'cuz it's really their own voice. so i kinda expanded on that thought and proposed that, if they don't hear a voice, it's probably because they're used to hearing their own voice in their own head that they think they're not hearing anyone. does that make sense?
whenever i read a textbook, i hear my own voice. i guess i'm boring since i always fall asleep while i read a textbook. but when i read a comic book, i always try to interpret the character's voice in my head. as in, i make up a voice for that particular character. yeah, i'm a dork, but hey, it makes comic book reading interesting & fun for me. need a little imagination right? that's what they're for.
so. do you hear a voice? it doesn't mean you're crazy. it's just something like a phenomenon!

1 Web Spinners:
Hmm....reading your post right now..I didn't hear your voice or mine. Some other normal 3rd voice.
Sometimes when I chat with ppl I hear their voice. Usually when they say something thats very easy to imagine them say in real life. Something that really shows their personality.
When I read books I usually end up hearing unique made up voice for each character, well unless its a bad book. I have to get into it. This is interesting though. I might ask a few of my friends as well.
