NHL TradeCentre '07

Today was Trade Deadline Day in the NHL. A lot more happened here than in the NBA (they only made..what...2 trades?). When I got home today, I read Jay Onrait's TradeCentre Blog. He was blogging during the afternoon's TradeCentre session that happened between 10am-6pm. Anyway, here are a select few quotes I pulled out that I thought was interesting or made me chuckle. Jay Onrait's funny, but he's not as funny as James Duthie. Duthie takes the cake.

Anyway, with the blog, I particularly liked the one about Karlis Skrastins. That was was pretty funny. You gotta admit that!

But yeah, I think today's biggest shocking trade was the Oilers dealing the heart-and-soul of the team, the face of the Oilers today, Ryan Smyth, to the Islanders for 2 prospects and a first rounder. No one is going to Oilers games anymore..who are they gonna go for? Lowe's gonna be in a lot of fans bad books for a long long time.

What is it with the Leafs and re-acquiring former Leaf players? We got Yanic Perreault and a pick for a promising, up-coming dman, Brendan Bell and a pick (haha I typed prick first). And the whole talk by the panel saying that we should've went after Gary Roberts. He's FREAKING 40yrs old! We do NOT need this team getting ANY OLDER! Wait..WE DO NOT NEED TO REACQUIRE FORMER LEAFS! I swear, JFJ's gotta go!

But what do I care? I'm no Leaf fan. :P

Jay Onrait's TradeCentre Blog

10:19 - Here comes the "Instant Analysis Team!" We're going back to Edmonton. Darren Pang looks paler than Tom Brady when he heard Bridget Moynahan was pregnant. I think Panger was out with Messier last night.

10:26 - James Duthie points out "It's been a quiet morning" and then moves on to talk about The Maple Leafs. "This year will it be all talk and no action?" Healy: "First they want Steen for Roberts. I can see why you're not working there any more (Mike)"

10:31 - Duthie lists the Maple Leafs needs. "Gritty winger, Second line centre." He says Nik Antropov is for rent. Wow. I'll bet John Ferguson Jr.'s phone is ringing off the hook!

10:32 - Time for a recap montage of last year's trade deadline when Craig MacTavish said "We're spending like drunken sailors right now," after the Oilers acquired Sergei Samsonov. If someone acquires Samsonov this year the difference will be that people will ASSUME that person IS drunk.

11:11 - Bob interrupts Duthie to say that the Sabres have acquired Ty Conklin from the Blue Jackets to back up Ryan Miller and replace Biron. Oiler fans everywhere are laughing so hard milk is coming out of their noses.

11:22 - Probably the best thing about the Biron trade: He can finally get his mask painted.

11:50 - Oliver e-mails me from the University of Toronto and labels me a "sellout" for drinking Starbucks instead of Tim Horton's. I'd like to point to Oliver that I have no coffee loyalty until the day that Karlis Skrastins opens up his first donut franchise. "Always got time for Karlis Skras-TINSH"

2:00 - We are one hour away from the deadline. I would say that I feel like a guy who has just pulled an all-nighter studying for a major exam, but I went to Ryerson so... obviously I don't know what that feel like. By the way, only proud Ryerson grads like me can make jokes like that.

2:21 - Duthie reminds Keenan that the guy he acquired for Roberto Luongo (Bertuzzi) has now been traded for a conditional draft pick. Mike is taking it well. If I were Duthie I would get a security escort out of that studio.

2:30 - Gord Miller reads the Dainus Zubrus trade right off his Blackberry: Zubrus and a bag of pucks for Jiri Novotny and a 1st round pick in 2007! Wow. Good deal for the Caps... this followed the re-acquisition of Yanic Perrault by the Maple Leafs. Perrault for Brendan Bell and a 2nd round pick in 2008. I love Healy line about Perrault's first tour of duty with Toronto: "He was playing with Gary Valk, no talent there, and Sergei Berezin, who wouldn't pass the puck to his dying Grandmother!" Healy is also "bringing it" today.

2:58 - Sidney Crosby on the Penguins acquisition of Georges Laraque: "He's been in the playoffs, he's been around the league for a while, it's a great pickup for us" Translation: "Now try to run me you bastards"

2:59 - Glenn Healy on the Penguins: "They chum around together" (chum around?)

6:06 - Bob McKenzie just pointed out that the difference in dollars between the Oilers and Smyth on a possible contract was $200-300 thousand dollars per year? Are you FREAKING KIDDING ME? The Oilers traded away the heart and soul of their franchise, a player who actually wanted to stay there (unlike Chris Pronger) over a difference of $200 to $300 thousand dollars per year? Are you kidding me? What in the name of Peter Pocklington is Kevin Lowe thinking? I just don't get it.
