My Baseball Statistics
so, on Monday night, i came home after Dark Side of Sexuality night class. wrote a test AND had a lecture after the test in that class. the test, i don't know how well i did. assuming i got all the questions i answered on the first try correct, & assuming i got all the questions i had no idea on were wrong, i'd get a 65%. that's not really encouraging. :( all in God's hands now!
anyway, so i come home on Monday night, with Harvey's dinner ready to be devoured. watched a bit of Band of Brothers, or what i didn't finish of it earlier. i spent pretty much all of Monday afternoon at the SLC3 studying my butt off. did it pay off? we'll see.
so anyway, back to being at home. i talked to some ppl, lalala, you know, MSN & stuff. i was planning on watching Crash as my after-exam-make-me-feel-better type thing to do. didn't get around to watching it. everyone went to bed by the time i was like 2am. so i was bored. didn't want to sleep just yet either. so i turn to my yellow envelopes i had sitting on my stereo since reading week. they contained all my statistics from the days i played little league baseball in the Erin Mills Baseball Association. YES, i kept track of my own stats. it was fun for me. i only kept track of my offensive stats anyway.
so yeah, the 1st envelope contained my 1st three season of little league ball. i played for the Erin Mills Sox, No Sponsor, & Pymm's Pirates. improved in each season. i even found a letter from my coach in my rookie season:
i had a lot of memories during my playing days in EMBA. i remember some significant plays i was a part of, whether they were good or bad. i remember being a part of a relay from the outfield to home plate to nab a runner trying to score. it was funny 'cuz just before that half of the inning, i switched positions with someone on the team 'cuz he felt i would be better there (how considerate & a nice compliment). so the play, the ball was hit into the outfield, i go out to cut-off the throw, & i just chuck it as hard as i can towards home plate, & makes it to the catcher on a one-hopper to nail the runner. the play on which i was on the bad part was when i hit a liner to a friend (not on purpose) & he leaps & makes a nice grab to rob me of a hit. lol...booo! sometimes i still bug him about it today. i remember another time i fouled off like maybe 16 straight pitches, one of them almost hitting my head coach, who was base-coaching 3rd base! haha i think i ended up getting a single on that play.
i even witness one of the weirdest plays i've ever seen. the bases were loaded, & the guy on 2nd decides to steal 2nd base. the catcher was so confused that he actually threw the ball down to 2nd base. runner on 3rd was pretty alert & paying attention to the play ran home for a run. haha we ended up with a run, & runners on the corners 'cuz the runner on 2nd ran to 3rd, & the guy that stole 2nd went back to 1st! HAHAAHA..it was hilarious.
during my EMBA career, i played mostly shortstop. towards the end of my career, i switched over to second base as i wasn't strong enough to make quick throws to first, & there were better players to play that position. i also played some outfield too, which i hated. especially early in the late game when the sky changes colour. you can't the ball, i lost the ball countless times in the air. :(
kinda funny how i came about being a shortstop. i remember prior to my rookie season, i got called for a Double AA tryout. i was a newbie, so everything was new to me. i didn't even know how to hit properly, didn't know how to throw properly.
one of the first drills i remember was a fielding drill. so i started off at third base, and then shift over to shortstop, then to second base, then to first, so we rotated through the infield. couldn't make an accurate throw from 3rd. same with shortstop. you'd think it'd be easy at 2nd, but nope, i was wild on that too. hitting, i don't even remember hitting the ball, & the pitcher was just lobbin' them in. that's how bad i sucked. i couldn't do anything, & i obviously didn't make the team!
so yeah, seeing that i couldn't throw for beans, when i got to my first team practice with the Erin Mills Sox, my throwing was fine from shortstop. i was actually, pretty good at it so it became my normal position ever since! each year i kept learning more & more about the position & was able to harness my skills with good coaches. late in my playing days, i learned that the shortstop was essentially the leader of a team in terms of fielding strategy, he was suppose to be the one that was calling out what the play was. my coaches pounded that in to me, telling me to yell out the play, & be a leader. so i guess that was instilled in my game & i still use it today when i play softball for MCBCSL, & soon, CCSA.
so that was me becoming a shortstop. this is how i became a pitcher.
as a pitcher, i started to pitch at the end of my rookie season. it was impromptu actually. i got to a game pretty early & coach just asked me toss a few from the mound. i guess i was pretty good, & he tells me afterwards that i'm starting the game. :S i won my 1st three decisions, & pitched 2 or 3 more in the playoffs, all wins.
i didn't pitch in my 2nd season 'cuz i was erratic. i think my arm got screwed up in my rookie season. but i started to pitch again a bit in my 3rd season. i wasn't consistently a pitcher, but moreso a positional player during my playing days.
i only had like one pitch in my so-called pitch arsenal. a fastball. really what it was, was me throwing the ball as hard as i can to the catcher. it was effective in my rookie season & the 2nd season i pitched. but as we got older, players learned to hit the heater. so i had to learn some more pitches. at least i attempted to. i kinda learned to properly throw a 2-seam & 4-seam fastball, a changeup, a curveball, and a slider. i can kinda throw a knuckleball & a screwball, which is a reverse slider.
although, i think my curveball & slider don't even move. i think my fastball has more movement than those pitches 'cuz sometimes if you throw a ball fast enough, it curves a little. like it would go out & then go right back inside (dunno if you can visualize that). an umpire once commented on that, he was just wondering what i was throwing. it was a fastball.
i've beaned ppl before. & i've been beaned. i've been warned for beaning ppl by umps too. but i've never intentionally thrown at someone before. i almost hit some guy in the head, but the time it happened was so coincidental 'cuz earlier in the game, i got beaned in the head. so the ump thought i was throwing in retaliation. :S i just didn't have control! :P
so yeah..as i was entering my stats into Excel, i noticed that my batting average would increase, through my first 5 yrs, & then drop by half in my last season. my last season was my worst season statistically, where my 5th season was probably my best statistically. i'll present to you my 6yr overall statistics which includes regular season, playoffs, & tournaments.
individual stats:
115 hits in 308 at-bats for a .373 batting avg.
102 runs, 17 doubles, 5 triples, 1 homerun, 146 total bases, 63 runs batted in, 82 walks, 104 strikeouts, 188 stolen bases
team stats:
65-80-6 (W-L-T), 1058 runs for, 1193 runs against
so that's my baseball life. i hope i wasn't gloating. or bragging. or..thinking i'm "the shit." 'cuz i'm not. i suck. :)
time for dinner. & Band of Brothers goodness. :)

Benson,i continued to play for another 3 seasons, all named Erin Mills Eagles, so in total, i played 6 seasons with EMBA before i ran out of places to play. i maxed out the league. i started off in Major PeeWee, into Minor/Major Bantam, Minor/Major Midget, & lastly Juvenile. EMBA doesn't even exist anymore, instead they merged with another baseball association and now called themselves the Mississauga SouthWest Baseball Association or something like that. something really long.
For a guy that's never played ball before, you sure surprised us. Your fielding and throwing improved every game and practice. Then to come out and pitch quite well, that was a bonus. You've got a real nice swing, just watch the ball a little better and you'll be banging them all over the place. Don't give up the game, you're good at it. Have a nice offseason.
